July 2026 Business Tax Deadlines: What You Need to Know

As summer heats up, business owners often find themselves intensely focused on mid-year operations and growth. However, July brings a critical wave of federal tax deadlines that demand your immediate attention. As an Enrolled Agent and tax problem resolution specialist, I frequently see how a single missed deadline can snowball into a massive IRS headache. Knowing exactly what is due—and when—is your best defense against unwanted penalties.

While we at IRS Tax Pros intentionally do not handle daily bookkeeping or routine accounting, our sole focus is solving tax problems. We want to ensure you stay compliant to avoid needing our resolution services down the road. Here are the crucial business tax due dates you need to track for July 2026.

Mid-Month Obligations: Withholding and Deposits

Business owner reviewing financial documents

For employers following the monthly deposit rule, July 15 is your deadline to deposit Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax for payments made in June. This is also the due date for nonpayroll withholding deposits under the same monthly rule.

Trust fund taxes, such as payroll withholding, are highly scrutinized by the IRS. Failing to deposit these funds correctly and on time can lead to the Trust Fund Recovery Penalty—a severe situation where business owners can be held personally liable for the unpaid amounts. Stay proactive and ensure these funds are transferred accurately to avoid triggering an IRS inquiry.

The July 31 Checkpoint: Quarterly Returns and FUTA

The last day of July is a major benchmark for employers, marking the deadline for several critical filings and deposits.

Form 941 and Employment Taxes

You must file Form 941 for the second quarter of 2026 by July 31. This is also the time to deposit or pay any undeposited tax under the accuracy of deposit rules. If your total tax liability for the quarter is less than $2,500, you are permitted to pay it in full with a timely filed return. However, if you already deposited the tax for the quarter in full and on time, the IRS grants an automatic extension to August 10 to file the actual return.

Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA)

Do not forget your unemployment tax obligations. If your FUTA tax owed through June exceeds $500, you must deposit the balance by July 31.

Certain Small Employers

If your overall tax liability is projected to be $2,500 or more for 2026, but it is less than $2,500 specifically for the second quarter, July 31 is your deadline to deposit any undeposited tax.

Employee Benefit Plan Filings: Form 5500

If your business maintains an employee benefit plan—such as a pension, profit-sharing, or stock bonus plan—July is an important month for compliance. The final due date for filing Form 5500 or 5500-EZ for the 2025 calendar year is July 31. If you operate on a fiscal year rather than a calendar year, the form is due by the last day of the seventh month after your plan year ends.

Even though the absolute deadline is the end of the month, we strongly recommend assessing your filing requirements as early as July 1. Gathering the necessary plan data takes coordination and time. Missing a Form 5500 deadline triggers some of the steepest daily penalties imposed by the IRS and the Department of Labor, so do not leave this compliance task until the last minute.

Automatic Extensions: Holidays and Disaster Areas

Tax deadlines are occasionally adjusted based on calendar quirks or severe weather events. If a standard due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline is automatically pushed to the next business day that is not a legal holiday.

More importantly, businesses located in federally designated disaster areas often receive broad filing and payment extensions. If your region has been impacted by extreme weather, verify your status before assuming you have missed a deadline.
