March 2026 Tax Agenda: Critical Dates for Individuals

March often feels like the final warning track before the main event in April. As the filing deadline draws closer, the urgency to organize your financial life increases. While we handle the complex heavy lifting of tax resolution and filing, staying ahead of the calendar is the best way to minimize stress and avoid IRS scrutiny.

March 10: Deadline for Reporting Tips

For those in the service industry, tip reporting is a compliance area the IRS watches closely. If you work for tips and received more than $20 in gratuities during February, you must report these to your employer by March 10, 2026.

You can fulfill this requirement using IRS Form 4070. Alternatively, a signed statement works if it includes your name, address, Social Security number, your employer’s name and address, the period covered, and the total tips received.

Why is this strictly enforced? Your employer must withhold FICA and income taxes on this income. If your regular wages cannot cover these withholdings, the uncollected amount will appear in Box 8 of your W-2. This often results in a balance due when you file your annual return, catching many taxpayers off guard.

March 16: The "Get on the Calendar" Benchmark

We are roughly one month away from the individual income tax deadline. If you have not yet scheduled a time to review your tax situation, now is the moment to act. As Enrolled Agents, we specialize in navigating the IRS maze, but our schedule fills rapidly as April approaches.

Don't Wait for Perfect Records

A common mistake is waiting until you have every single receipt or form before calling. Please do not let a missing document delay your appointment. We can easily create a checklist of outstanding items during our initial review. It is far more efficient to start the process with 90% of your information than to wait until the deadline is days away.

Even if you anticipate needing an extension, preparing a preliminary return now is crucial. Remember, an extension to file is not an extension to pay. By estimating your liability now, you can pay the tax due and significantly reduce interest and failure-to-pay penalties. We can then file the extension on your behalf, ensuring you remain compliant.

Standard Calendar Rules

Weekends & Holidays: Following standard IRS protocol, if a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline is automatically pushed to the next business day.

Disaster Area Relief: Taxpayers living in federally designated disaster areas may be eligible for automatic extensions. If you believe this applies to you, please verify the current status via the official channels below:
