October 2026 Tax Deadlines: What Individuals Need to Know

October brings a critical set of tax deadlines for individuals, particularly those who requested filing extensions earlier in the year. As we move into the fall, taxpayers must be prepared to address extended deadlines for 2025 individual income tax returns, foreign financial account reporting, and monthly tip income requirements.

Navigating these dates can be complex, but staying proactive is the best way to prevent unnecessary penalties. Below is a breakdown of the key individual due dates for October 2026.

October 13 - Reporting Tipped Income to Employers

If you work for tips and earned more than $20 in tip income during the month of September, you are required to report those earnings to your employer by October 13. To fulfill this requirement, you can submit IRS Form 4070 or provide a signed, written statement. Your statement must include your name, address, and Social Security number; your employer’s name and address (or the establishment's name, if different); the specific month or period the report covers; and the total amount of tips you received during that timeframe.

Once reported, your employer is responsible for withholding FICA and income taxes on those tips from your regular wages. In cases where your standard wages are not enough to cover the necessary FICA and tax withholding, your employer will report the uncollected amount in box 8 of your W-2 for the year. You will then be responsible for paying this uncollected withholding when you file your annual tax return.

October 15 - Deadline for Individual Extensions

For taxpayers who requested an automatic 6-month extension to file their 2025 income tax return, the final deadline has arrived. By October 15, you must file Form 1040 and submit payment for any outstanding tax, interest, and penalties due.

October 15 - Taxpayers with Foreign Financial Interests

October 15 is also a critical date for individuals with offshore assets. If you received an automatic 6-month extension to report your 2025 foreign financial accounts to the Department of the Treasury, this is the final due date to file Form FinCEN 114.

Weekends and Legal Holidays

When tracking tax deadlines, standard weekend and holiday rules apply. If a specific due date happens to fall on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the IRS automatically extends the deadline to the next business day that is not a legal holiday.

Disaster Area Extensions

The IRS often grants administrative relief to taxpayers living in designated disaster areas, which can extend standard due dates. To verify if your specific geographical area has been designated as a disaster area and to review applicable filing extension dates, please consult the following official resources:
